Starting on Friday evening, Sept. 13 at The Terrace Room, “A Chef’s Journey to Oakland” is a dinner series created by chef Eddie Blyden that traces his more-than-twenty-year career that wound its way through West Africa, Germany, and the Caribbean before finding him here in the East Bay. His restaurant résumé includes an executive chef position at the Rendezvous Bay Hotel on the island of Anguilla, years spent working at Tantris restaurant in Munich, and other high-profile engagements.

Spanning three nights over the next three months, the series takes place in the glass-enclosed restaurant housed inside an historic circa-1927 landmark building that commands impressive Lake Merritt views.

Blyden's September menu reflects his familial ties to Sierra Leone and Africa's deep culinary influence on the world, showcasing dishes that connect West African cuisine to those of the Caribbean islands and the American South. Dishes include black-eyed peas and fried oysters with remoulade; Cameroon-spiced blackened fish with jollof rice; oxtail and trotter soup with tropical root vegetables; watermelon-papaya salad; and many more.

Beginning at 6 p.m. that evening will be a performance by the James Henry World Music Band.

The second dinner — set for Friday, Oct. 18 — will feature a menu spotlighting German and Swiss cuisine paired with beers in the Oktoberfest spirit. Guests will be able to enjoy live music as well during this dining experience.

Set for Nov. 15, the final dinner in the series celebrates the culmination of Blyden's journey — again, accompanied by live music.

Tickets are available here and can be purchased for any individual dinner in the series or for all three — and include admission to a live music performance and a complimentary glass of wine, pint of beer, or cocktail of the night for each ticket purchased.
