May 30, 2008Want Fries with That?The good news is that it didn't happen before the premiere, but still those involved with the Alameda Theatre renovation and re-opening have to be a little shocked about the timing. Yesterday at about 8:30 a.m., just 8 days after the opening, a Pepsi truck hit the marque causing a yet undetermined amount of damage. All this after a years-long and $37.3 million renovation of the art deco theatre originally built in 1932. May 29, 2008Gunshots in AlamedaTwo teenagers were injured by gunfire Sunday night after a fight broke out at Chef's Wok on Webster Street, the Mercury News reported Tuesday. Police who responded to the shooting at 10:40 p.m. found hundreds of young people at the scene, but nobody could identify the shooter, according to reports. Investigators were altered by hospital staff about the victims, a 17-year-old girl and 16-year-old boy, both from Oakland. The two victims were treated and released. May 28, 2008Pocket Park DedicationThe City of Oakland dedicates a new pocket park on the Waterfront Trail this morning, the city of Oakland announced. The park, in a little-known corner of the Oakland Estuary, will open to walkers, bikers and nature lovers at 10:30 a.m. Councilmembers Larry Reid and Jane Brunner will attend the opening. The park is located at Oakport Street at Zhone Way and is part of the proposed 500-mile long San Francisco Bay Trail. Funds for the project came from the Oakland Trust for lean Water and Safe Parks, Measure DD, a $198 million bond measure. May 19, 2008Magazine Winners
Oakland Magazine took home three awards and Alameda Magazine one at the East Bay Press Club 2007 Excellence in Print Journalism Contest, according to a recent EBPC release. Other big winners at the awards banquet, held May 9 at the Silver Dragon in Oakland, included the Contra Costa Times with 19 awards, the San Francisco Chronicle with 16 and the Oakland Tribune with 15. Two student journalists, Stephanie Lin from the University of California, Berkeley and Justin Morrison of Contra Costa College, were honored. May 13, 2008New Addition to the Family
The Oakland Zoo has a new addition to the family! On May 3 a healthy male giraffe was born, according to a recent zoo release. Zoo officials haven't named the new calf yet, but report that the youngster is spending his time sleeping and eating and bonding with his mother, Twiga. Expect him to make his public debut sometime later this month. The Oakland Zoo is located at 9777 Golf Links Road, Oakland, (510) 632-9525.
