ICE Creates a Chill

Rumors about the actions of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents put a chill into parents and teachers at several East Bay schools yesterday, the Oakland Tribune reported. Indeed, the actions of the agency with the frightening acronym, ICE, even caused Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums to rally outside East Oakland elementary school in protest. According to the Tribune, rumors included fears that Berkeley middle school students were being carted off in vans (false) and that agents were conducting surveillance near schools (true). ICE officials claimed that rumors were overblown  but admitted conducting surveillance at residences near schools. [Photo: Oakland Tribune]

Truckers Protest Fuel Prices

About 50 Latin American and Punjabi truck drivers lined up fender-to-fender outside the Union Pacific rail terminal yesterday to protest the lack of support for diesel fuel from the carrier companies that hired them, the Oakland Tribune reported. According to truckers involved in the Cinco De Mayo protest, the company is not paying them for the fuel as promised and many claim that they are paying more than they make. The company that dispatches the drivers agreed to pay them 5 percent of their fuel costs above $2 per gallon, but, according to the Tribune, no payments have been made. This leaves the drivers paying the full $4.50 per gallon for the diesel fuel. Read more »

A Valuable Lesson

Today the Oakland Unified School District hopes to teach the governor a valuable lesson. In a press release issued today, the OUSD announced plans to hold rally today at 4 p.m. at the Paul Robeson Administration Building, 1025 Second Ave., Oakland. The OUSD wants the governor to get the message that budget cuts are one of the biggest threats to California Schools. At the rally, demonstrators hope to present real solutions, help local residents apply internal pressure on legislators and operate action stations that will help participants express their opposition to cuts through e-mail, mail and phone calls. Repreive for Apple Moth

In an era where pollution comes from water, air and food, last week's light brown apple moth ruling is being seen by many as a victory. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced last week that aerial spraying for the light brown apple moth would be halted until at least Aug. 17 and that more health testing would be done on the controversial agent used in the spraying, the Oakland Tribune and Bay City News Service recently reported. This will come as great news to the many people around the Bay Area concerned about the health risks and not convinced that the spraying would be an effective means of stopping the pest. The action came on the heels of a Santa... Read more »

Schwarzenegger at USS Hornet

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger likely will face protests when he visits Alameda on Wednesday from parents and others who say his idea for across-the-board budget cuts hurts local schools too much, InsideBayArea.com reported. The cuts are aimed at helping bridge the reported $8 billion state deficit. But the cuts also mean that Alameda schools are losing $4.5 million, a shortfall that already has prompted teacher layoffs and district leaders to cut music, sports and other programs. Schwarzenegger will visit Alameda as part of the Bay Area Council's 2008 Outlook Conference, which is expected to draw about 1,000 business leaders and local elected officials. Already, protesters from the Alameda Education... Read more »

New Timeline for Base Redevelopment

SunCal Cos., the Orange County developer chosen in July to build a 770-acre complex of homes, shops and offices at the former Alamea Naval air base, recently asked the city for a six-month extension to submit plans. The city agreed, the San Francisco Chronicle reported today. SunCal recently ran into trouble on some of its other projects in Southern California. The developer is also the target of seven lawsuits since October claiming the company hasn't paid $105 million in debts. Those problems are related to the weak housing market and do not affect Alameda Point, a SunCal spokesman said. The delays at Alameda Point are because the... Read more »

School Back in Local Control

The Board declared its intention, effective July 1, to install an Interim Superintendent, and to embark on a community-driven, nationwide search for a permanent superintendent.  The Board is committed to using its newly restored power to promote inclusive and fiscally responsible administration of the Oakland Unified School District.
