Montclair Western Town

The City of Oakland Public Works Agency, Park and Building Maintenance Division will be installing the newly refurbished historical horses and stage coach in the Montclair Western Town located in Montclair Park today at noon at Montclair Park, 6300 Moraga Ave.
 
Originally designed and built in the late 1950s by the Parks and Recreation carpentry shop under direction of Bert Truebody, Western Town provided new opportunities for imaginative play for children of that era. Since then, many Oakland children have enjoyed their time on and around the Wells Fargo replica.

Neldam's May Close

The landmark Neldam's Danish Bakery, which opened almost eight decades ago, has listed its property for sale and may be forced to close the doors of the family business this summer, the Oakland Tribune reported recently.

As a result, many Oakland families who have enjoyed Neldam's popular Dream-of-Cream cake and other tasty treats on graduation, birthday and wedding occasions might have to imagine life without the bakery. And the city may stand to lose one of its oldest institutions — one that had been set to celebrate its 80th anniversary nextyear.

MTC 2035 Plan

Are there significant transportation-related environmental issues such as air quality, climate change or land use that MTC should explore in its environmental assessment of the Transportation 2035 Plan?

MTC is preparing a Draft Environmental Impact Report (EIR) for the Transportation 2035 Plan, a master plan to guide the nine-county San Francisco Bay Area region's transportation investments over the next 25 years. The EIR for the Transportation 2035 Plan will analyze the broad, regional environmental impacts of implementing the investments identified in the plan.

Students Walk Out

Chanting and holding signs, hundreds of students walked out of class Wednesday to show their anger at the school board's decision to gut funding for high school sports as a way to offset a $4.5 million budget shortfall, the Oakland Tribune reported today.

Trustees initially were considering eliminating every penny from high school sports and closing the school district's two swim centers, which would have saved $465,000.

But during a special meeting that stretched into the early hours Wednesday morning, trustees opted instead to cut $265,000 from sports and the pools, which the public also... Read more »

Oakland Approves Plan for More Police

The City Council approved Mayor Ron Dellums' proposal to use $7.7 million to recruit and train more police officers late Tuesday, as Oakland aims to beef up its public safety efforts to confront crime, the Oakland Tribune reported today.

The council voted shortly after 11 p.m. after a lengthy debate over where, exactly, the money would come from and how the Police Department would train so many new officers at once.
