Food lovers gathered at Pappo restaurant Aug. 31 when Slow Food Alameda teamed up with Slow Food Nation to host a local fundraiser. Dollars raised from the event benefited the Alameda Point Collaborative Growing Youth project, which teaches the mainly teenage children of formerly homeless Alameda Point residents how to grow and eat fresh and local; entrepreneurial skills around chicken and bee farming; and how to educate their community about nutrition and other life-affirming skills. Growing Youth members, who are paid a stipend, grow and deliver fresh vegetables in a part of Alameda formerly known as a nutritional desert—and grew the produce that inspired the mouthwatering menu.
