The city of Alameda and Friends of the Alameda Animal Shelter began a new relationship on Jan. 1. With costs split between the two, there remains a $300,000 gap every year that needs to be filled by volunteers and donations, an effort spearheaded by FAAS and supported by local businesses and individuals.
A look at fundraising sources reveals some amazing collaborations. FAAS cites lemonade stand and bake sale proceeds, plus generous allotments of kids’ allowance as part of traditional donations. An Alameda boy devoted his bar mitzvah community service project to fulfilling the shelter’s Wish List for last year. Two St. Joseph’s students donated more than $400 to the shelter in lieu of birthday presents after their “Save the Animals” party at the ice rink on Park Street during the holidays.
Santa Paws, a favored Christmas treat at Dog Bone Alley, gives pet owners a chance to spread some cheer, and owner Elizabeth Pinkerton and photographer Tonya Perme worked together to donate more than $1,000 to FAAS. Urban Island Home Furnishings turned the wet bar over to FAAS during a concert series and created a special consignment account so that individuals can donate an item and its sale price goes to FAAS. A fundraising thermometer appears in Alameda’s two newspapers, provided by an anonymous donor every week. High Street Station Cafe has gotten in the game, too. And the first ever Wiggle Waggle Walk in June raised $5,000.
Volunteers commit time on-site, but also earn $1,000 three or four times a year at Golden Gate Fields staffing food and beverage booths. And there’s an annual fundraising party, “After the Ball,” a great show of teamwork among local business sponsors that net the shelter $42,000 at Rock Wall Wine Company last year.
