When it comes to ice cream and milkshakes, I can take ’em or leave ’em. Except, that is, when it comes to coffee ice cream and coffee milkshakes. To know me is to know that on these I am hooked. I have tried them in cities around the Bay Area and have concluded: Few are in the same league as our very own Tucker’s Ice Cream (1349 Park St., 510-522-4960, www.tuckersicecream.com).
First thing Tucker’s has in its favor is flavor. This coffee ice cream tastes like coffee. This might sound like a given, but it’s not always so. While coffee ice cream is more predictable than coffee milkshakes—so insipid on occasion that it causes you to wonder whether any part of it ever shared the planet with a coffee bean—even the ice cream can vary from instant-coffee bland to Peet’s perfect.
Second thing about Tucker’s is that you get options. With the ice cream, if you crave flavor but don’t want a lot, you can order a single scoop. With milkshakes, the options are unlimited. So, you can have a coffee milkshake made with coffee ice cream, or you can have a coffee milkshake made with vanilla ice cream and a shot or two (or more!) of espresso.
And then there is my No. 1 choice: Tucker’s double-shot espresso milkshake, made with coffee ice cream and served with a delicious little mound of cream on the top ($6.75). For someone who has been there, and done coffee milkshakes, this decadent indulgence is worth the calories and the price.
