Description:

Late last year, this Lake Merritt neighborhood deli and diner opened its doors after an overhaul of a Grand Avenue storefront. “The place didn’t even have a kitchen,” co-owner May Seto jokes. Seto, who owns the deli with her husband and business partner, David Wasem, brings a stark humility to the project, but her results reflect years of restaurant experience in San Francisco and the East Bay. The small space has all the signs of a cozy contemporary diner—counter seating and a plush deli case with simple and healthy sides like kale and quinoa salad with queso fresco, beets, and shallots. Most proud of the deli case, Seto describes the initial concept: “First, we imagined a deli where people would come in, order, and walk across the street to picnic at the lake. But we still wanted the human interaction that we love about food.” So in December, Grand Lake Kitchen began serving up a thoughtfully crafted brunch menu: a savory French toast served on rye bread, with two poached eggs, wild mushrooms, Parmesan, and arugula; flavorful chilaquiles with pickled red onions; or a satisfying breakfast “sando”—a fried egg, country ham, Jack cheese, and avocado on ciabatta. Today, a steady stream of folks lines up to sit lakeside for brunch. But not to worry if you’re still looking to stock up on picnic fodder. Sandwiches like the popular oyako—an open-faced egg salad with crispy chicken skin and mâche on rye—are available, along with unique beer and wine selections. Seto and Wasem haven’t forgotten picnickers. “Look,” she points to the latest addition to their marketplace, “picnic blankets.” Serves breakfast, lunch, dinner Mon., Wed.–Sun., weekend brunch.
