Hopscotch is a diminutive, classy hole in the wall on the western boundary of Uptown—and the next big thing in Oakland dining. Chef Kyle Itani’s cooking is all about flavors, melding earthy and refined sensibilities in every dish. Every one reflects a novel take on American cuisine tweaked with Japanese ingredients and informed by the Japanese penchant for balanced and pleasing visual arrangements. He’ll have you at the first amuse-bouche. The half-dozen starters and half-dozen mains—for instance, beef tataki, Dungeness crab and smoked soba noodles, lardo-wrapped pork rillettes, gumbo, sweet potato gnocchi—are re-thought often, but there are a few regulars, like the Uptown burger and buttermilk-fried chicken. The hands-down show-stopper is the Yonsei oyster ($5), which shares its shell with a dollop of uni (sea urchin), salmon eggs and citrus soy sauce—ocean heaven. Oh, and don’t forget the butterscotch pudding. This homey cubbyhole with a hip-retro interior, a well-curated wine list, artisan cocktails, a well-versed waitstaff and inspired food is destined for success. Bring it on. Serves dinner Tue.–Sun., lunch Tue.–Fri. and brunch Sat.–Sun
