Chef/owner Preeti Mistry brings Indian street food indoors and creates a setting that radiates the fun of a Mumbai beach retreat and takes the subcontinent’s famous chaat, or savory snacks, to a new level. The London-born, U.S.–raised chef and Top Chef alumna takes her spices seriously, as evidenced by the shelves of jars in Juhu’s open kitchen. It’s her careful blending and balancing that give each dish its special kick and character, from the pavs (an Indian version of sliders and the menu’s foundation) and the changing incantations of sev puri (a crisp, tostada-like treat topped with relish and chutneys) to the appetizers like Desi Jacks (a spicy-sweet curried riff on Cracker Jack), paneer puffs, and vindaloo chicken wings. Don’t overlook the sandwiches, salads, and the few main courses that break out of the “snack” parameters. Juhu offers four wines on tap, as well as a half-dozen local beers, and introduces novel iced teas, lemonades, and original yogurt lassis. The only dessert is Straus soft-serve vanilla ice cream dressed up with many intriguing house-made toppings and syrups. You don’t have to travel to Mumbai to experience Mistry’s memory of family visits to Juhu Beach, made real and delicious through her kitchen alchemy. Serves lunch and dinner Tue.–Sat.
