Is it a cafe or an art gallery-performance space? Both. With nary a bit of wheat in sight, eclectic Oakland Hot Plate mashes up the flavors of Spain, the Caribbean, Latin America, and Cuba, so patatas bravas, tortillas, vegan pastele (a tamale cousin), and cod fish fritters mingle aside rice, beans, green bananas, and plantains. Plantains served as the bread for the Andouille sausage sandwich, an interesting notion that proved, however, a bit hard to eat. The fried chicken sandwich may have been petite, but it packed a walloping spicy kick. The OHP seasonal menu rotates, but count on kale salad, soup, and inventive smoothies to always be on hand as well as sandwiches, hot plates, coffee, tea, and juices. The beer, wine, and soju choices are small, but OHP does serve hard ginger beer. Live music on Thursday nights, lending a community gathering-place vibe to the small and attractive space. Serves lunch Wed., Thu., Fri.
