Do you love barbecue? Phat Matt and Charlotte Gonzales do and share their decades-long love of marinated tri-tip, brisket, pulled pork, ribs, chicken and links from a Telegraph/Northgate/Korea Town storefront next to A Taste of Denmark. Southerners will appreciate the tasty and authentic North Carolina–style pulled pork sandwich. Get it traditional—listen to Charlotte on this one (and on her barely-sweet sweetened tea, too)—which means crunchy vinegar coleslaw tops off the meaty mass dwarfing the soft bun. “It’s a texture thing,” she says. Unless you can tolerate super high-octane cayenne pepper, order yours with regular sauce with a side of hot sauce. Side dishes are what you’d expect: macaroni and cheese, collard greens, yams, baked beans, potato salad, corn. But Phat Matt’s also does the unexpected: Anybody for “piggy nuggets,” dry-rubbed pork loin wrapped in bacon then smoked and drizzled with a honey pineapple glaze? Or smoked candied bacon, chocolate candied bacon or smoked chocolate candied bacon pecan pie? Everything’s better with bacon, mmm. Pecan pie beats the blackberry cobbler hands-down. A must visit place for real. See if it is, as the Gonzales claim, “So good it’ll make you want to slap you momma!” Serves lunch and dinner Wed.–Sun.
