Description:

This most stylish Chinese restaurant has a lot going for it: good looks, good food, good service, good prices. And on a recent mid-week, late-night visit, we could also get in without a reservation, perfect for poor planners looking for accessible Chinese cuisine with a simple but sophisticated edge. The appealing appetizer list so grabbed our attention that we ventured no further than its offerings, settling on minced-chicken lettuce cups, steamed spinach mushroom dumplings, and the smoked salmon onion pancake, following suggestions of our server. Pine nuts, water chestnuts, shitake mushrooms, and soybeans dressed up the minced chicken, while chives and Chinese soy mustard added refinery to the dumplings. But it’s the pizzalike pancake, which tempted with carefully arranged salmon decorated by hoisin artistically drizzled in a circular labyrinth, that we’ll order again and again. The Chu in the Restaurant Chu name belongs to restaurateur Philip Chu of Kirin fame, and he has something good going on here. Check out happy hour 4–7 p.m. daily plus 9–10 p.m. Fri.–Sat.)
