Fast-casual style Tender Greens brings a heartier, grown-up eco-conscious dining option to Berkeley. It serves fairly hearty, stick-to-your-bones fare with a menu resolutely anchored by meat. You choose a protein served as a plate with mashed potatoes or a substitute side and salad or in sandwich form. Or you can choose between 10 standard “big salads” with protein. The meat isn’t dumbed down, so if you order chicken, you get white and dark meat with the skin, the steak still has some fat and gristle, and the tuna is cooked extra rare. That’s not to say that the greens are second fiddle, because salads are filled with crunchy, crisp, fresh produce. The ordering is a bit confusing, but the prices are totally reasonable. In short, solid steak, fried chicken, beer, outdoor patio, plus big ol’ chocolate chip cookies sum things up. There’s a lot to like here—and those tender greens aren’t even the half of it. Serves lunch and dinner daily.
