If the line for Bakesale Betty is too long, venture to another Temescal newcomer, an upscalish sandwich-salad café with a gourmet flair. Owner Grace Lee—a cheerleader for and onetime employee of the former tenant, the Temescal Café—puts her wedding and special event planning skills to good use and creates delicious, sustainable and organic baked-fresh goodies, rotating hearty soups and yummy sandwiches. Gone is the café’s old hodgepodge of mismatched furniture, replaced with neat rows of wooden tables, identical metal chairs and eye-appealing local art for sale on muted green walls. The hanger steak salad and agua frescas deserve praise, as does the noteworthy Classic BLT, which stacks Applewood smoked bacon, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a sweet, perfectly toasted bun for a toothsome treat. The price here is right, too, with croissants, coffee cake and scones going for a couple of bucks and sandwiches and salads in the $8 range. Serves breakfast and lunch Tue.Sun.
