Right in the heart of Alameda, Toomie’s has been a local destination for great-tasting Thai food for many years. The restaurant is named after the owner’s wife and, indeed, eating here is a family affair, featuring friendly service and a welcoming atmosphere. Numerous curries are the star attractions, with the duck red curry—roast duck with eggplant, tomatoes, pineapple, bell peppers, basil leaves and grapes in red coconut-milk curry—being a real standout. After numerous visits, however, it is the chicken eggplant stir-fry—chicken stir-fried with eggplant, bamboo shoots, onions, bell peppers and basil leaves in a Thai chili paste—that rises to the top of our list.
