Hear Some Old-Timey Music at The UC Theatre

The Dust Bowl Revival’s sound is true Americana tunes.

Break out the washtub bass and Pa’s ol’ strummin’ box, because the Dustbowl Revival is bringing back the oaky, bluesy sounds of yesterday’s America better than a wax cylinder on a hand-cranked Victrola.

The internet discovered this underground old-time band when the group’s music video for the song “Never Had to Go,” featuring actor Dick Van Dyke, went viral in 2015, but the Dustbowl Revival is known just as much for its folksy sound as its captivating performances.

With fiddles, ukuleles, and lonesome voices, the band fuses eclectic old-timey ragtime and bluegrass into a spicy Americana jambalaya and creates a hybrid sound that’s both intimately familiar from grandpa’s stories and completely new for the modern age. In recent years, the band has added deep soul and funk influence to the repertoire; expect the band to explore this direction further in the newest album, a love story with a dark and somber middle but a happy end, scheduled to premiere this summer.

It’s a right ol’ shindig. Sunday, April 8, 8 p.m., $22.50, UC Theatre, 2036 University Ave., Berkeley, TheUCTheatre.org
