Sometimes you just need a good laugh, and the comedy scene in the East Bay turns out to be pretty hilarious. There may not be a dedicated comedy club per se, but that doesn’t mean comedy lovers can’t find funny stuff happening most days of the week.

In “Make ’Em Laugh,” page 24, you’ll find our survey of where to hear the funnymen and funnywomen doing uproarious skits, stunts, and other fun, farcical stuff. This comedic tour takes in Comedy Oakland, Laugh City, Critical Hit!, Starline Comedy Night, Moonlight Comedy at The Uptown, All Out Comedy Theater, and Town Business Comedy night. Oakland is so witty and droll these days that an inaugural Oakland Comedy Festival is lining up for the fall. With a traipse through these venues, you’ll have a leg up on the laugh-a-minute personalities whose work no doubt fuels this festival.

Geeks and nerds and other smarty-pants types who like to show off the breadth and depth of their individual collective knowledge will want to go directly to “Trivial Pursuits,” page 28, a survey of pub quizzes for just about every night of the week. Yes, genius thinkers and Jeopardy-wannabes can form teams Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday nights at spots as old as The Albatross and as comfy as The New Parkway Theater and compete for prizes and bragging rights. The beauty is that the unlikeliest team member sometimes knows the winning answer.

If you get tired of the sitting around, consider hitting the dance floor. “A Cure for Two Left Feet,” page 29, is your guide to how to get your salsa, bachata, merengue, and other Latin dance on, from La Peña Cultural Center and Allegro Ballroom to Ashkenaz and the Malonga Casquelord Center. You can dance — just try it.

Ah, summer. Soon the kids will be home from summer camp and back in school, your humdrum life as uneventful as ever. But until then, you have a little time to yourself, so do yourself a favor. Schedule a date night with your mate or your bestie and then go slake your thirst with a libation or two. “The Guide: Summer Cocktails,” page 31, rounds up some delicious cocktails for toasting farewell to the season. Cheers, and so long summer.
