This bicycle celebration has it all: daredevils, stunt riders, and libations.
Put the pedal to the metal at Oakland’s Pedalfest. This annual celebration of all foot-powered velocipedes on two wheels shows that bikes aren’t just for kids. From death-defying stunt shows to displays of the newest, weirdest, most experimental bikes, this festival has something for the bike enthusiast of any age.
Enjoy thrilling daredevil stunts by professional stunt riders Zak Maeda and Casey Holm, and BMX trick shows by Perfection On Wheels’ BMX Stunt Team. Of course, it’s not all on land. The event also features an amphibious bike race, where stalwart cyclists ready to tackle both land and sea, will pedal through Jack London Square and into the Oakland Estuary. Watching all that activity is sure to work up a thirst, so afterwards retire to Drake’s Brewing Lounge Area to enjoy some liquid refreshments.
But what about rides? The Cyclecide Pedal-Powered Carnival brings famous pedal-powered rides, like the whirling Cyclefuge and the four-bike Kiddie Carousel. You can’t just sit and let hydraulics do all the work: This is Pedalfest, and you’re going to earn your own thrill by pedaling. Sat., Aug. 3, 11 a.m.-5 p.m., free, Jack London Square, 472 Water St., Oakland. http://pedalfestjacklondon.com/activities.
