Belcampo Meat Co. Expands to NYC

Oakland's Belcampo Meat Co. now has a sister-restaurant in New York City.

It's one of some thirty food-and-drink destinations in Hudson Yards — a 28-acre "mini-city" built over the last six years at a cost of $25 billion in western Manhattan. 

As reported in Specialty Food Magazine, the new Belcampo is a fourth-floor sit-down and takeout space, the first New York venture for the sustainability-focused meat brand.

Belcampo's CEO Anya Fernald founded Oakland's Eat Real Festival and has been a judge on the Food Network's Iron Chef America. She has also worked with Chez Panisse founder Alice Waters as the executive director of Slow Food Nation.

In 2102, Fernald co-founded the Belcampo Meat Co. — a whole-animal butchery outfit whose certified organic free-range, grass-fed livestock are raised on a 27,000-acre farm near Mount Shasta. The company has six California retail shops, the flagship of which is in Jack London Square. 

The New York City restaurant offers such meaty fare as steak salad, lamb burgers, bone-broth soup, duck-confit poutine, sirloin carpaccio, and merguez sausages. 

Hudson Yards' other eating-and-drinking options include Thomas Keller's TAK Room; Brooklyn-based favorite Van Leeuwen Ice Cream; Australian import Bluestone Lane; and Kawi and Fuku — a Korean fine-dining restaurant and a fried-chicken fast-casual spot, both helmed by Momofuku founder David Chang.

The complex also features another Oakland-based brand: Blue Bottle Coffee.
