Best Place for Dinner With a Movie

Alameda Cinema Grill at the Alameda Theatre

Sure, it’s hard to beat a box of popcorn and a bag of red vines when you’re watching the newest Hollywood blockbuster. But admit it, wouldn’t Captain America versus Ironman go down slightly easier with some real food? Like free-range chicken wings or mahi tacos or fried calamari—and perhaps a cold beer? Or how about a Pinot Noir, or a cocktail, even? Whiskey sour, anyone? No worries. Cinema Grill at the Alameda Theatre has got your back. And the kids’ too, with pizzas, soft drinks, or even a Caamano Bros High Noon Sarsaparilla (handcrafted in Berkeley). You can nosh on any of those selections (and more) while sitting in front of the big screen. But here’s a pro-tip: Get your order in early, so you won’t be tumbling for your food in the dark.

Grooviest Place to Shop Under One Roof

Alameda Marketplace

When it comes to come to one-stop shopping for the eco-conscious East Bay consumer, it’s tough to beat Berkeley Bowl or Oakland’s Farmer Joe’s. You want organic produce and grass-fed meat? Check. Recycled-paper goods and nontoxic cosmetics and cleaning supplies? Check, check, and check. Artisan foods and coffee? Check, again. But have no fear, sustainable Alamedans. There’s no need to cross the estuary to get your groovy shopping on. Just pedal over to the Alameda Marketplace. Not only does Alameda Natural Grocery have all of your organic produce needs, but the center also includes Baron’s Meat & Seafood, The Beanery Coffee Co., Feel Good Bakery, and Farmstead Cheeses & Wines. And that’s not all. It offers groovy food to go, too, at the East End, Greens & Grains, and the Sushi King.

Best Place to Find a Shoe Guru

Alameda Orthopedic Footcare

Set back from the street, between a barber shop and the Lost Weekend Lounge is Alameda Orthopedic Footcare, which has been in the business of repairing, modifying, and selling custom-made shoes, therapeutic footwear, and orthoses since 1993. Owner Peter Losev is a certified pedorthist. This means he is trained to assess lower limb anatomy and biomechanics, modify footwear, and use supportive devices to address conditions that affect the feet and lower limbs. The store also carries pre-manufactured foot-care devices, including heel lifts, metatarsal pads, night splints, and socks for diabetics. There’€™s also an intriguing collection of scuff and salt stain removers, shoe stretchers, and sheepskin insoles. There really is no excuse in this store to suffer uncomfortable and ill-considered shoes or leave resolvable medical foot conditions unaddressed. Accepts most medical insurance, too.

Best Outdoor Shopping Experience

Alameda Point Antiques Faire

Held every first Sunday of the month, the Alameda Point Antiques Faire hosts hundreds of vendors selling antique and vintage items, often in mint condition. They turn the barren tarmac into rows upon rows of bustling bazaar. The fee to get in ranges from $15 to $5, depending on how early or late you arrive, but browsing is so worth the price of admission, because you’€™ll find awesome antiques. Word to the wise: Work your way from the back to the front, and bring a wagon, handcart, dolly, or something to haul home treasures like the can’t-live-without footstools, end tables, divans, headboards, brass bed frames, vintage posters, geodes, beach umbrellas, cuckoo clocks, typewriter keys, silver service sets, guitars, and poker chips. Vendors are often eager to barter as the fair winds down around 2 p.m.
