Best Margarita and Taco Combo

Acapulco

With its colorful tiles and cozy atmosphere, Alameda's Acapulco is a dash of sunshine on a rainy day. Restaurateur Michael Weisner reopened this Mexican restaurant with a new chef specializing in fresh, high-quality ingredients, and it shows. Acapulco offers the usual fare--tacos, burritos, enchiladas--but it's in its specials where the cuisine really shines. Treat yourself to a margarita, but make it one with the sweet, tangy taste of tamarind. Pair it with tacos, but make them duck tacos in tortillas made from purple-black corn smut, a delicacy known as huitlacoche. Yes, it's a fungus--and the friendly, informative staff will make sure you know that--but its earthy taste is the perfect balance to the rich, juicy meat. This combo will leave your taste buds satisfied and eager to try the next special from Acapulco.

Best Theatrical Mainstay

Altarena Playhouse

There's not a lot of theater in Alameda, and some companies have closed or moved elsewhere. One constant is Altarena Playhouse, which has been producing shows since 1939, and in the same spot since 1957. As a community theater, it presents a mix of heartwarming dramas and comedies, small-scale musicals, and occasionally more audacious offerings. For the last two summers, it has presented "Alternative Altarena" world premieres by Alameda playwrights. The company is currently in flux after the recent departure of artistic director Clay David, but after 78 seasons, Altarena isn't going anywhere.
