Best Place to Relove Furniture

Artistic Home Studio & Boutique

If you need an artistic escape with a practical purpose, check out Rachel Gingold’s furniture painting classes, including patina and rust workshops and a trash-to-treasure workshop for teens and tweens at Alameda’s Artistic Home Studio & Boutique. “It’s kind of like a bar,” Gingold said. “Everyone comes in for therapy.” She helps people make over inherited furniture, items that aren’t the right color, and favorite pieces in need of love. “I help them update and add a pop of color,” she added. “I’m big on reused, recycled, and reloved. Every piece has a past, a story, and I’m trying very hard to keep them from going into a landfill.” Once a month, Gingold and her partner, JaYing Wang, a mosaic artist who runs the adjoining Alameda Art Lab, put on Pinterest Unplugged nights, materials and instruction provided. Make art, not war!

Best Marina at Which to Spend an Afternoon

Ballena Isle Marina

Plentiful parking, breathtaking waterfront views, dining, and activities make Ballena Bay the island's most visitor-friendly marina. Start by grabbing lunch on the patio at Abigail's Moroccan Cuisine (1132 Ballena Blvd., 510-523-5500, AbigailsAlameda.com), or Pier 29 (1148 Ballena Blvd., 510-865-5088, Pier29Restaurant.com) for traditional American fare. After lunch, head to Mike's Paddleboards (1150 Ballena Blvd., #121, 510-867-6542, MikesPaddle.com) for fun in the sun. Mike's provides equipment rentals and classes for stand-up paddleboarding on the bay. Finish up with a soothing round of Savasana at Island Yoga (1136 Ballena Blvd., Suite D, 510-205-5003, AlamedaIslandyoga.com; recently relocated from Central Avenue). Don't forget to pack some bait and tackle for a day on Ballena Bay, a favorite local fishing spot.

Best Community Garden

Bay/Eagle Community Garden

The Bay/Eagle Community Garden is an oasis of greenery in an otherwise industrial zone. A block from the historic Del Monte warehouse on Bay and Eagle streets, the garden features 25 plots brimming with vegetables, fruits, herbs, and flowers—all organic—and includes a community outreach plot to cultivate donations to the Alameda Food Bank. Hosted by the Alameda Housing Authority, the community garden is open to all Alameda residents, though its popularity means there's a waiting list with priority given to AHA residents and low-income apartment dwellers. Stop by an "open garden" event or just to say "hi" and get some gardening tips from the friendly gardeners.
