Best Vintage DVD and VHS Store

Rocket Reuse

The shelves are packed with weird and forgotten books on everything from film to humor to true crime, but Rocket Reuse is so much more than just a bookstore: It's the place for everything reused, recycled, or repurposed. It's a one-stop shop for the ephemera of years gone past with vintage clothing, vinyl records, DVDs, and even these strange objects called videocassettes (remember those?), turning every visit into an archeological dig through pop culture history. Say hi to Chip and Melonie, the store's chipper window-front mannequins always dressed to the nines in the most fashionable grandma jewelry or nightmares-in-pastel polyester jumpsuits. Check out the Rocket of Deals for the best discounts on books and bric-a-brac.

Best Way to Do Birds a Good Turn

Tern Watch

Every spring, volunteers drive onto restricted sections of Alameda Point to monitor an endangered least tern colony that breeds on the abandoned runways of the former U.S. Naval Air Station. After mating, females lay eggs directly on the runways, where they hatch into fluffy chicks that are at risk from hawks, peregrines, and other predators. Enter Tern Watch, a volunteer-based program that Susan Euing of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service started in 2007. In 2016, Euing recorded 403 nests and a hatching success of more than 85 percent. On June 17, the East Bay Regional Park District partners with USFWS to celebrate the annual "Return of the Terns," a cool way to visit the colony, without harming any birds. Details at EBRPD's Crab Cove activity page.

Best Sticky Business

The Alameda Fruit Co.

Alameda was once famous for farms, so it's fitting that the Island is now home to The Alameda Fruit Co. Owners Jenn Crane and Andrea Leal, aka the Marmalade Mamas, were inspired by nostalgia for jam-making, the maker movement, the rise of the cottage industry, a desire to share knowledge with their kids, and putting local produce to good use. The pair specializes in homemade preserves and marmalades using seasonal, locally grown produce. Spicy margarita marmalade on savory scones. Orange cardamom bourbon marmalade with cheese. Fig jam with lavender, raspberry wine, and vanilla bean on everything. Num num. "It's a functional creative outlet," Crane said. "So long, Smucker's," added Leal. "We're more small batch."
