Best Puppy Finishing School

Bravo!Pup

Having a puppy is one of the true joys of life. Except for the chewing. And the nipping. And the running there you need him to come here.Turns out, these little bundles of cute need training. A fun way to get from "€œBad puppy!"€ to "€œGood job!"€ is to enroll in classes with Bravo!Pup, where experienced instructors walk owners through the sits and stays using gentle and engaging techniques. Each session has multiple play breaks, so pups too young for the dog park can start socializing in a safe and sanitary environment. Since the classes take place in the backyard and back room of pet boutique See Spot Run, you can always pick up some new rewards on your way in.

Prettiest Tree-Lined Street

Central Avenue

Ginkos and oaks, redwoods and pines, flowering plums and Japanese maples: Trees soften the harsh city angles of buildings and houses. They shade sidewalks and roofs, and they improve yards and shield porches from drivers whizzing through Alameda at that mighty 25 mph. Alameda boasts many such picturesque streets under leafy canopies, from the West End and the Gold Coast to the East End. Definitely among the prettiest, if not the prettiest, is tree-lined Central Avenue near Sherman and where it intersects with Encinal Avenue. The arching limbs here reach over, across, and almost into the roadway, creating a dappling effect on sunny days. The cottages, stately Victorians, bungalows, and multiplexes here look welcoming and friendly, thanks to the mature trees reaching skyward aside them.

Best Place to Pretend You’re in Mexico

Crown Memorial State Beach

Ah, island living — strolling down a 2.5-mile beach lined with warm sand, cooling your feet occasionally in the gentle lapping of waves as warm as bath water. The sound of kids frolicking in the shallows mixes with the distant sounds of a band playing a free concert. It almost makes you forget you'€™re in Alameda. Crown Memorial State Beach was restored in 2013 to its former beachside resort state. Sand dunes descend into the bay where the water stays shallow, warm, and inviting — perfect for dozing in a floatie. A short walk past the crowds near the parking lot gives way to a seemingly endless stretch of beach where there'€™s always plenty of room to spread out and enjoy the views of kitesurfers jumping off of waves. Don'€™t miss the 53rd annual sand castle contest on June 8, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
