Ferry Building-style Market Hall Planned for Jack London Square

The latest and maybe last version of such concepts is set to launch next summer.

Jack London Square announced this week that Oakland Assembly — a 40,000-square-foot market hall in the style of San Francisco's Ferry Building — will join the waterfront neighborhood's dining scene next summer. 

According to a press release, the two-level venue will feature live entertainment, community events, and food and beverage purveyors including such local faves as Preeti Mistry, Satoshi and Sachi Kamamae, Anthony Kresge, Matt Horn, and Abram Plaut and Tomoharu Shono. 

With construction slated to start early next year, with some dozen kiosks predicted to launch by summertime, the Oakland Assembly space at 55 Harrison St. will feature a large indoor stage, a second-floor banquet hall and balcony, and outdoor alfresco dining areas. 

The long-term lease with real-estate development/management/operational company Kinzie Bridge Holdings is the third and largest market concept led by John McEnery IV, following San Jose's San Pedro Square Market and Santa Cruz's Abbott Square Market.

“Bringing our concept to the beautiful Jack London Square in Oakland will add something truly interesting, exciting, and fun to Oakland’s rich food scene with our family-friendly entertainment and culinary destination,” McEnery said.

As reported at Eater, various versions of this concept for the Jack London Square district have surfaced then stalled over the last fifteen years.

Mistry is set to helm a two-part kiosk, comprising Juhu Snacks & Sweets and Juhu Chinese. The Kamamaes' okonomiyaki-centric Okkon will deliver Japanese street food. Kresge plans to open two spots in the Oakland Assembly, with Belly Goat delivering craft burgers and The Bull & The Bird offering charcuterie, cheese, and panini. 

Matt Horn of Horn BBQ fame will open KowBird, specializing in "all things chicken." Plaut and Shono will open Mensho Tokyo Ramen. Oakland Winery will make its debut in Oakland Assembly with a wine bar and mixing lab. Additional food and beverage purveyors will be announced at a later date.

“Oakland’s vibrant and diverse culinary scene is reflected in Jack London Square," said Visit Oakland's CEO Mark Everton.

"Generations of visitors and Oaklanders have been coming to the Square since the early 1950s for restaurant experiences they could not find anywhere else in the Bay Area.

"As the restaurants and culinary spaces expand and evolve to meet the needs of the influx of new residents to the district, the future looks great for the Square and for those ready to explore it," Everton said.
