Fruitvale's Red Bay Coffee Expands to San Francisco

The community-spirited Red Bay team now also roasts at Dogpatch's new Daily Driver bagel shop.

Oakland's Red Bay Coffee now has its first San Francisco outpost.

Set to open on June 15 in the city's Dogpatch neighborhood, Daily Driver is part wood-fired-bagel shop and part coffee roastery. It's also San Francisco's first and only cheese-and-butter-making creamery.

A project of two couples — Tamara Hicks and David Jablons, and Hadley and David Kreitz — Daily Driver makes its own bagels using organic local ingredients, and makes its own add-ons. These include not just hand-batted organic butter and cream cheese but also ricotta, ghee, and quark. Also roasted on-site is Red Bay Coffee to be sipped alongside bagels and other treats.

Hicks and Jablons have a long dairy-related history: They own Toluma Farms and Tomales Farmstead Creamery in western Marin County. Hadley Kreitz works at Toluma Farms, while David Kreitz is an industrial engineer who created Daily Driver's wood-fired oven, designed and built the space, and fine-tuned the recipe for its bagels — of which the quartet plan to make over 7,000 every day.

Daily Driver's collaborative partner is five-year-old, Fruitvale-based Red Bay Coffee — whose owners Keba and Rachel Konte are roasting a special blend in the space. Red Bay's beans will also be sold in the new shop.

Keba Konte — whom the East Bay Express dubbed a "radical roaster" and who wants consumers to remember "that coffee is Africa's gift to the world" — is a longtime local coffee pioneer. Rachel Konte helms Oakland's OwlNWood boutique. Red Bay is also served at several East Bay locations.

The Kontes "envision a world in which coffee is a vehicle for inclusion, social and economic empowerment, entrepreneurship, innovation, and environmental sustainability," as explained at Red Bay's website.
