Will and Karen Gioia, chef-owners of Berkeley's fifteen-year-old Gioia Pizzeria, are opening a new San Francisco location next month.

Slated to launch on Friday, June 7 in the 900-square-foot space formerly occupied by Two Sisters Bar & Books, this second Gioia Pizzeria will be the first-ever slice shop in Hayes Valley.

The Gioias closed their six-year-old full-service restaurant on San Francisco's Polk Street last fall, deciding to scale back toward their original fast-casual concept in the new Hayes Valley restaurant, which will offer slices and pies in two different sizes as well as sandwiches, salads, and daily specials.

“We’re going back to our pizza roots,” Karen Gioia said.

“We love the edgy feel of the traditional and timeless New York-style pizzeria elevated with premium, thoughtfully curated California ingredients. Hayes Valley now has that same energetic buzz as New York City, so it feels right to bring our take on classic New York-style slice shops to the neighborhood.”

Designed especially to accommodate a high volume of takeout and delivery orders, the Hayes Valley restaurant features a menu board, counter, and other details created by Oakland-based design team Oakology. San Francisco artist Nathaniel Russell created wall illustrations depicting the New York City and San Francisco skylines — representing the Gioias' cross-country culinary journey.

Will Gioia said that when he was growing up in Brooklyn, "slice shops were a quintessential part of the neighborhood that everyone could enjoy."

Now at the new restaurant, "whether you’re a busy parent, student, or traveler, our offerings will be easily available to go for a quick, convenient and delicious meal. We’re so excited to bring this soulful and familiar New York experience to the neighborhood," he said.
