Halal Guys is opening an Oakland location on Friday, July 27.
In the space on Broadway formerly occupied by Locol, this latest outpost of the New York City-based American-Muslim-cuisine group will feature its signature Middle Eastern-inspired dishes such as halal-certified chicken, gyros, and falafels served in sandwiches and on platters, which diners can customize with their choice of savory sauces. Sides will include fries, hummus, and baba ganouj, with baklava for dessert.
The Halal Guys was founded in 1990, after its three founding members launched a hot-dog cart that attracted NYC cabbies, many of whom lamented the dearth of quick-service halal meals. Today the group boasts hundreds of locations throughout the USA, Canada, and Asia. A Berkeley location (depicted above) opened this January. It was the group's second Bay Area location, following a San Francisco shop that opened last year.
Beginning at 11 a.m. on grand-opening day, the first fifty customers in line will receive free platters of food. The first thousand fans will receive gifts such as T-shirts, pins, tote-bags, pushpins, stickers, and more. A prize wheel will also yield further prizes for grand-opening attendees.
