Homegrown Launches New Menu

The evolution includes matcha, crispy bread, and ancient-grain bowls.

Homegrown restaurants, including the Danville and Lafayette locations, will start offering a new menu on Nov. 14.

As part of their evolution from sandwich spots to wider-spectrum "clean-eating cafés," the restaurants will feature warm ancient-grain bowls for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Sandwiches will still be served, but on thinner, crispier bread.

Chef Michaela Skloven, whose previous gigs include award-winning New York City restaurants Gramercy Tavern and Per Se, was brought onboard to oversee the transition. Continuing Homegrown's practice of sourcing ingredients from its own certified organic farms, Skloven will ensure that every dish features seasonal and organic produce as well as more diverse, assertive flavors -- such as chermoula, za'atar, and matcha.

New items will include the Matcha Chicken Avocado Bowl with grilled chicken breast, avocado, warm ancient grains, feta, cucumbers, cherry tomatoes, farm greens, and basil-lime-matcha dressing; the Spicy Braised Tofu Bowl with braised tofu, charred broccoli, avocado, warm ancient grains, red cabbage, farm greens, miso-lime dressing, and a sriracha drizzle. 

New sandwich highlights include the Charred Broccoli featuring molten feta, caramelized onions, chermoula aioli, and farm greens as well as the Za’atar Smashed Chickpea with raw beets, avocado, cucumbers, pickled red onions, cilantro, lemon-harissa tahini, and farm greens. 

The new breakfast menu includes a Two Fried Eggs Bowl with applewood bacon, harissa home fries, caramelized onions, roasted red peppers, braised farm greens, and chermoula aioli and Coconut Chia Porridge with toasted coconut, chia seeds, tart dark cherries, sultanas, oats, ancient grains, and pecans, served with almond milk.

When the company expanded last year from its Pacific Northwestern birthplace into the Bay Area, owners Ben Friedman and Brad Gillis bought two acres in Contra Costa County's Discovery Bay; this farmland now provides produce for all the Homegrown stores in California.
