Homemade Cafe Is Turning 40

Anniversary festivities include $1 sides of bacon and forty-cent cups of joe.

The Homemade Cafe, which might actually be Berkeley's oldest surviving restaurant, has just announced the details of its fortieth-anniversary celebration, set for Saturday, Nov. 23 and Sunday, Nov. 24.

From 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on both days, carafes of mimosas will be priced at $10 each, a whole side of bacon will be priced at $1, and a cup of coffee will cost only forty cents, just as it was in 1979, when this cozy cafe was opened by Norm and Marshall Berzon and Janet Hinze.

Breakfast has been served there all day, every day, since then.

Serving breakfast and lunch and gaining a fond reputation for fine home fries, buttermilk sandwiches, house-baked coffee cakes, classic egg dishes, and diner sandwiches — with a spotlight on bacon — current owner Collin Doran, depicted above, ensures that the Homemade Cafe remains an integral part of its diverse southwest-Berkeley neighborhood. 

Doran grew up in Berkeley, eating frequently at Homemade and working for a while as a busboy at its now-closed Hollis Street location. Gaining experience over a long restaurant-business career as everything from dishwasher to chef, he also worked at Oakland's noted Bay Wolf.
