Float in a dragon boat, have fun, and watch fireworks in Berkeley.
It’s America’s birthday, and you know what that means: hot dogs, guys painting faces on their stomachs, and whistling the “Colonel Bogey March” (That’s a thing other people remember happening at July 4 parties, right? Right?), and, of course, fireworks.
Berkeley celebrates the 243rd Independence Day with an all-day festival down at the marina with food, live entertainment, and more. Come hear the musical stylings of local artists like guitarist Groovy Judy, Afropop ensemble Sadzamoto, and the Berkeley High Jazz Ensemble (not so many stomach-whistling guys, though, apparently). The event’s Adventure Playground includes a zipline and other playground activities perfect for children. Berkeley Canoe Racing Center will hold free dragon boat rides starting at noon.
But no Fourth of July is complete without fireworks, and Berkeley has got those, too: The grand finale begins at 9:35 p.m over the water near the end of the Berkeley Pier. Get to the southern seawall early to get your spot for best viewing. Shed a tear for liberty and salute a bald eagle for freedom. Vehicle parking in the marina is $20 cash ($50 for large vehicles). Thursday, July 4, noon-10 p.m., free, Berkeley Marina, 201 University Ave., Berkeley, AnotherBullwinkelshow.com/4th-of-july.
