Sweet Leaf and Tradewinds were both formerly owned by Nestlé.

Oakland-based Purity Organic, Inc. announced this week that it has acquired Dunn’s River Brands, Inc.

Dunn’s River Brands Group owns both the Sweet Leaf bottled-iced-tea brand and the Tradewinds bottled-iced-tea brand. Sweet Leaf was founded in Beaumont, TX, while Tradewinds was founded in Cincinnati, OH.

Sweet Leaf was formerly financed by Nestlé, which invested $15.6 million in the company in 2009, then acquired the entire company in 2011.

Meanwhile, Sweet Leaf acquired Tradewinds in 2010.

Nestlé sold both iced-tea companies to Dunn’s River Brands in 2017.

Launched in 2003 as an organic apple-juice company and now headquartered on 14th Street, Purity Organic manufactures fruit juices, coconut water, and “Superjuices” blended from fruits, roots, spices, and vegetables.

“We are excited about this acquisition as it continues our mission of continuing to provide better-for-you brands to our customers,” said Purity Organic CEO Mary Page Platerink in a press release.

“We have an aggressive roadmap in 2020 and look forward to continuing to serve our key markets and expanding into new areas for all our brands,” Platerink said.
