The Aussie band navigates the rapids and turbulence of the times with “Currents,” its third album. Catch the show at The Greek.

They say the desert is where religions are born, and the vast red badlands and endless starry skies of the Australian outback make it perfect for the soul-searching that inspires faiths, movements, and psychedelic rock bands.

Australian psychedelic rock band Tame Impala formed in the Perth music scene in 2007, attracting notice with a funky ether-wave aesthetic that recalled mind-expanding ’60s groove bands like the Lemon Pipers and Strawberry Alarm Clock while cutting the classic sound with modern dream-pop sensibilities. After debuting its first EP in 2008, the band exploded nationally and toured with You Am I, The Black Keys, and Yeasayer.

Now these Aussie are taking to American shores to promote their newest album, Currents, the band’s first foray into more dance-oriented music. Frontman Kevin Parker, who wrote, recorded, performed, and produced the band’s previous albums, also mixed Currents, aiming for a “communal” sound that would see the band’s music played at clubs and discos.

Tame Impala brings the cosmic grooves and trippy color light show to the Greek Theatre. You bring your mind. Prepare to have it blown.
