Sprudgie Award Finalists Include Oakland's Mother Tongue

Other local faves are also finalists in this annual "best in coffee" contest.

Finalists have been announced in the eleventh annual Sprudgie Awards, honoring roasters, entrepreneurs, cafes, and other people and companies representing what the countest's founders call "the best in coffee" worldwide. 

Some of those finalists are based right here in the East Bay.

Oakland's Mother Tongue Coffee Roasters is a finalist in the Notable Roaster category, along with seven others including Ditta Artigianale of Florence, Italy and Dear Green of Glasgow, Scotland.

Finalists in the Best New Cafe category include Berkeley's Wrecking Ball and Oakland's The Crown: Royal Coffee Lab & Tasting Room — along with six others including San Francisco's The Coffee Movement and the Substance Cafe in Paris, France. 

Located in Uptown, the CRL&TR is a multipurpose outfit comprising an education center, event space, and more — created by a forty-year-old family-owned importer of specialty green coffees that has spearheaded the third-wave coffee scene. 

In 2018's Sprudgie Awards, Oakland's Red Bay Coffee won an honorable mention in the Notable Roaster category; and Dave Eggers' book The Monk of Mokha — about Mokhtar Alkhanshali, whose Oakland company Port of Mokha offers exclusive small-batch Yemen-grown coffees — was a finalist in the Best Coffee Writing category.  

Public voting is permitted in the competition, which is sponsored this year by Oregon-based Pacific Foods, whose line of products includes the Barista Series of non-dairy coffee "creamers" made from soy, rice, oat, almond, and coconut.
