The Face of Independent School

Founded in 1989 by four women with a vision—and $50 to their names, Oakland’s Northern Light School is an independent PS-8, providing private school education to East Bay students from all socio-economic and cultural backgrounds. “NLS takes a holistic approach to teaching—mind, heart, spirit and body—we teach the whole child,” says founder, Michelle Lewis. Starting each day, the entire school convenes for “Morning Circle,” a forum that includes mindfulness and meditation as well as celebration of compassion, inclusion, and strength of character. “This daily ritual unites us as a family, and instills personal accountability,” says Lewis. My graduates are my heroes. They go out into the world convinced that they can make a difference.”
