The Face of Local Groceries

Piedmont Grocery Company

Published:

At the turn of the 20th century, Piedmont Grocery delivered foodstuffs to the wealthy denizens of Oakland’s toniest neighborhood via horse drawn cart. Today, the purveyor of fine food garners clientele from beyond the borders of Piedmont, with its diverse and unique offerings. “What we have over the ‘Big Guys’ is flexibility and the ability to innovate,” says Amy Pence, Piedmont Grocery’s vice president. “We stock local, and artisan-made products because we can take smaller quantities and experiment. My grandfather took over the business in 1957. Today, my job is to bring our store, into the 21st century.”
