Grab your clubs and head to the links today. The City of Oakland's office of Parks and Recreation announced a special senior day today at Lake Chabot Golf Course. The event is being held in collaboration with the Department of Human Services and the Alameda Healthy Living Council and more than 100 people are expected to attend. The program includes an introduction to the golf course, three rotating golf clinics and lunch. The Oakland Zoo has a new addition to the family! On May 3 a healthy male giraffe was born, according to a recent zoo release. Zoo officials haven't named the new calf yet, but report that the youngster is spending his time sleeping and eating and bonding with his mother, Twiga. Expect him to make his public debut sometime later this month. The Oakland Zoo is located at 9777 Golf Links Road, Oakland, (510) 632-9525.

Court Summerfield, 47, of Alameda died Saturday in a crash at an amateur race at the Altamont Motorsports Park, according to the San Francisco Chronicle. The Alameda man hit the wall at 3:30 p.m. during the 24 Hours of LeMons event and was pronounced dead at Sutter Tracy Community Hospital. He was going about 50 miles an hour and wasn't near any other cars when he crashed. Summerfield was a fixture at Ole's Waffle Shop where he worked for the last 15 years. He met his wife, Vickie...

Rumors about the actions of federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents put a chill into parents and teachers at several East Bay schools yesterday, the Oakland Tribune reported. Indeed, the actions of the agency with the frightening acronym, ICE, even caused Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums to rally outside East Oakland elementary school in protest. According to the Tribune, rumors included fears that Berkeley middle school students were being carted off in vans (false) and that agents were conducting surveillance near schools (true). About 50 Latin American and Punjabi truck drivers lined up fender-to-fender outside the Union Pacific rail terminal yesterday to protest the lack of support for diesel fuel from the carrier companies that hired them, the Oakland Tribune reported. According to truckers involved in the Cinco De Mayo protest, the company is not paying them for the fuel as promised and many claim that they are paying more than they make. The company that dispatches the drivers agreed to pay them 5 percent of their fuel costs above $2 per gallon, but, according to the Tribune, no payments have been made. This leaves the drivers paying the full $4.50 per gallon for the diesel fuel.

Oakland has been selected as one of several locations from across the nation to receive a special education grant from The Atlantic Philanthropies. According to a recent release, the mayor is expected to attend the $15 million grant announcement today at 10 a.m. at Calvin Simmons Middle School, 2101 35th Ave., Oakland. The grant will go to help five Oakland schools over four years. "The selection of Oakland Unified to participate in this national initiative is a tremendous coup for our district's middle-school students," Mayor Ron Dellums said. The Atlantic Foundation is an international foundation with a focus on children and youth.

• Close to $4.5 million is being cut from Alameda Public Schools and, often, music is the first to go when budget cuts hit. In reaction, the Alameda PTA Council is hosting a Save Our Music benefit concert to raise $200,000 for school music programs. According to a recent release, the lineup includes The Eyewitness Blues Band (Al Hart, Stan Bunger, Mike Sugerman of KCBS and Steve Rubenstein of the SF Chronicle), Natasha Miller, Terrence Brewer and Alameda Public School students.
