Awaken Café Awakens

Phase One, the World-Class Espresso Bar and Gallery opens today in Oakland. The cafe will be having their opening party and first artist reception on the first Friday, May 2. The owners will be at the café all day today, helping out and jumping for joy. Come down and them if you have the time. Of course, from now on they will be open every day, so join them whenever you want to. Awaken Café, 414 14th St., (510) 836-2058,

This place serves an excellent cup of coffee! The beautiful artwork adoring their walls is an added bonus... I'm looking forward to their upcoming exhibit called Night & Day featuring landscapes and figurative paintings and prints by Gary Comoglio. I went to his Surrealist show earlier this year at the Lucky Ju Ju in Alameda - what a trip!

Earl J. Rivard

You can't keep the good ones down. Alameda native Earl J. Rivard was hit by a car when he was four months old and then, later in life, was hit two more times. The blind and partially-paralyzed Rivard doesn't let any of this get him down, releasing Troubadour Blue.
Track: "Saving Face."
