Oakland Pothole Blitz

In a concentrated effort to keep the City traffic safe and respond to pothole complaints, Public Works Agency crews continued a citywide pothole-filling blitz this month, the agency reported in a release this week. The blitz is a three-month effort, one week each in February, March and April. Public Works crews are focusing in a different geographical service area for each blitz, in order to make a tangible impact.

“I am encouraged by the success of this hands-on campaign to address a major quality of life issue in our City, “said Mayor Dellums. “Through this effort, I am confident we will continue to confront the issue of pot holes, further limiting the damage to our roads, our neighborhoods and our vehicles.”

Crews will filled an estimated 1,800 potholes on Tuesday April 15.

“Filling potholes is not glamorous work, but it’s one of the basic services that the City must provide to residents. Potholes affect our everyday quality of life and I thank the Public Works Agency for bringing the pothole blitz to neighborhoods that really need the help, “stated City Council President Ignacio De La Fuente.

During the blitz so far, Public Works crews from the Department of Infrastructure Operations filled close to 2,500 potholes. By reassigning existing crews to the blitz, the work can be accomplished without incurring additional costs to the budget.

“This is an innovative strategy to focus our limited resources to alleviate a large problem, “said Public Works Agency Director Raul Godinez II. “But it’s a problem that will continue to grow until we can secure capital funding to resurface our streets more often.”

Earl J. Rivard

You can't keep the good ones down. Alameda native Earl J. Rivard was hit by a car when he was four months old and then, later in life, was hit two more times. The blind and partially-paralyzed Rivard doesn't let any of this get him down, releasing Troubadour Blue.
Track: "Saving Face."
