Public Works Pothole Blitz

In a concentrated effort to keep the city of Oakland traffic safe and respond to pothole complaints, Public Works Agency crews will start a citywide pothole-filling blitz this week. The pothole blitz will be a three-month effort, one week each in February, March and April. Public Works crews will focus in a different geographical service area for each blitz, in order to make a tangible impact.

Work will be done this week throughout the Zone 1 area (generally West and North Oakland) and crews will fill an estimated 850 potholes.

“Potholes continue to be a significant quality of life issue for Oakland residents—especially
following the severe winter storms,” said Mayor Dellums. “We are confident that through this campaign, we can continue our work of aggressively confronting this citywide problem limiting the damage to our roads and neighborhoods.”

On average, the City receives upwards of 250 pothole complaints a month citywide, however many more go unreported. This year’s series of rain storms has created much more damage to City streets, causing more potholes than usual because of the damage water does to the tack coat or “glue” between asphalt layers. In March, the blitz will continue into the Central Oakland Zone 2 and then in April, crews will focus in the third zone of East Oakland.

“The pothole blitz is a strategy to focus our limited resources to alleviate a large problem,” said Public Works Agency Director Raul Godinez II. ”But it’s a problem that will continue to grow larger until we can secure capital funding to resurface our streets.”

Earl J. Rivard

You can't keep the good ones down. Alameda native Earl J. Rivard was hit by a car when he was four months old and then, later in life, was hit two more times. The blind and partially-paralyzed Rivard doesn't let any of this get him down, releasing Troubadour Blue.
Track: "Saving Face."
