A 16-year-old Oakland boy learned Friday that he may remain incarcerated until age 25 for his role in the slaying of a teenage girl at an Alameda park on Halloween night, the Oakland Tribune reported yeserday. His brother, 15, and a 13-year-old boy were also sentenced in juvenile court in the death of Ichinkhorloo "Iko" Bayarsaikhan, an Alameda High School student who was shot during what police say was a botched robbery. Rosenblum Cellars, started by veterinarian Kent Rosenblum and his wife, Kathy, in 1978 has been sold to one of world's largest beverage makers for $105 million, the Oakland Tribune reported today. The boutique winery moved to the former Naval Air Station in 1987 and has now been sold Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines. Mike Kohne, the director of marketing for the winery, said no changes will be made to the winery except for freeing up owner and part-time veterinarian Kent Rosenblum to make more and better wine, according to a Tribune story. City Councilmembers Nancy Nadel (District 3) and Jean Quan (District 4) will hold a press conference Monday, January 28, 2008, at 10 am, at City Hall to affirm the City of Oakland’s commitment to reducing pollution, oil-consumption, blight, and global warming through its ban on single-use plastic bags.
On Tuesday, January 29, 2008, Alameda County Superior Court Judge Frank Roesch will consider the plastic bag industry’s lawsuit to stop the City’s ordinance banning the use of non-biodegradable carryout plastic bags at retail establishments in Oakland.

The publisher of the Oakland Post has requested police protection because of a death threat he says he received, according to a published report. The Oakland Tribune reported Thursday that Paul Cobb told the newspaper he called police and city officials Wednesday night saying he feared for the safety of himself and his wife. A man who reportedly had been associated with Your Black Muslim Bakery told Cobb he had been approached "to set up" the publisher, the newspaper reported. Five months ago, the editor of the Oakland Post, Chauncey Bailey, was shot to death on his way to work. NBC reporter Bob Dotson recently taped a feature about Oakland artist Mario Chiodo and the nonprofit educational monument project Remember Them: Champions for Humanity for the "American Story" segment on NBC-TV's the Today Show. The segment will run today sometime between 7 a.m.–10 a.m. Also interviewed were Chiodo intern Raynell Phillips, a junior at MetWest High School and Berkeley resident Arryon Greely, the 9-year old model for Ruby Bridges, one of 25 humanitarians featured in the monument. The four-piece bronze sculpture will feature 25 humanitarians and be 52 feet long and 21 feet tall. It will be placed in a public park in downtown Oakland. Read more Read more »
