Rosenblum Sold

Rosenblum Cellars, started by veterinarian Kent Rosenblum and his wife, Kathy, in 1978 has been sold to one of world's largest beverage makers for $105 million, the Oakland Tribune reported today. The boutique winery moved to the former Naval Air Station in 1987 and has now been sold Diageo Chateau & Estate Wines. Mike Kohne, the director of marketing for the winery, said no changes will be made to the winery except for freeing up owner and part-time veterinarian Kent Rosenblum to make more and better wine, according to a Tribune story. "One of the reasons Kent and his family decided to actually make this transaction was the fact that this new company has every intent of keeping everything the same," Kohne said. "That means making the wine in Alameda, having the retail room in Alameda and employing the people here." The sale will allow Rosenblum to take advantage of Diageo's world-class marketing and distribution power, Kohne added. According to its Web site, the last decade has been an "exceptional one" for Rosenblum Cellars. The winery has continued to gain the respect and appreciation of the public and its peers and has been honored with numerous awards and high scores for its wines. It now produces about 195,000 cases of wine a year and is distributed in every state and 16 countries. As part of the sale, Rosenblum is contracted to stay with the company for at least the next five years.
