Weekend Events

Some great weekend events in the Island city:

• See Alameda residents show off their new "Tropical Tiki Office" this Saturday on HGTV's Design Remix show. The episode was taped in 2006 and will show the Design Remix team give the room purpose, clear up clutter and make functioning workspaces. 5:30 p.m. Jan. 26.

• Enjoy the ninth annual Kiwanis Club's chili cook-off and barbecue dinner this Saturday. Fight the chill with a great bowl of chili. Western attire encouraged. 5:30 p.m.–10 p.m. (chili tasting 6 p.m.–7 p.m.), Jan. 26, $40, Albert H. DeWitt O Club, 641 W. Red Line Ave., (510) 764-1472.

• See Head Trip, a road film by John Law and Flecher Fleudujon featuring the famous Doggie Diner Dog Heads this Saturday. The daylong event goes from 2 p.m.–11:30 p.m. and the film shows at 4 p.m. and 8 p.m. Jan. 26, $5, Rhythmix Cultural Works, 2513 Blanding Ave., (510) 865-5060.

Earl J. Rivard

You can't keep the good ones down. Alameda native Earl J. Rivard was hit by a car when he was four months old and then, later in life, was hit two more times. The blind and partially-paralyzed Rivard doesn't let any of this get him down, releasing Troubadour Blue.
Track: "Saving Face."
