Weekend Events

• 23rd Annual Boys and Girls Club Auction Dinner (March 8) Attendees of Alameda’s premier black-tie can help the community while they dance the night away. The fundraiser offers hundreds of items, getaways and dining experiences to bid on. A review of auction items starts at 5:30 p.m. and dinner is served at 7:15 p.m. with dancing following. • Lunar New Year Festival (March 8) The Harbor Bay Intercultural Committee celebrates the Year of the Rat with its 10th annual lunar New Year festival at the Harbor Bay Landing shopping center. The event features the Lincoln Middle School band, Chinese calligraphy, a food-carving demonstration, jewelry making and arts and crafts. 11 a.m.–3 p.m., free, Harbor Bay Landing Shopping Center, 800 block of Island Drive, in the courtyard adjoining Safeway.

• Lunafest Film Festival (March 8) See award-winning films by, for and about women at this special event. All funds raised benefit the Breast Cancer Fund and The Family of Women. 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., $20, $10 students, Auctions By The Bay Theatre, 2700 Saratoga St., (925) 209-5948, www.lunafest.org.

• Fauré Requiem (March 9) Canadian composer Allan Bevan makes his U.S. debut in Alameda, presenting his Nou Goth Sonne Under Wode (A Meditation on the Crucifixion of Christ) with the Orchestra Gloria and the Soli Deo Gloria Choir in a program that includes Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem in D Minor, a choral–orchestral setting of the Roman Catholic mass for the dead. 3:30 p.m., $20–$25, St. Joseph’s Parish, 1109 Chestnut St., (888) 734-7664, www.sdgloria.org.

Earl J. Rivard

You can't keep the good ones down. Alameda native Earl J. Rivard was hit by a car when he was four months old and then, later in life, was hit two more times. The blind and partially-paralyzed Rivard doesn't let any of this get him down, releasing Troubadour Blue.
