FRIDAY

Alameda County School Superintendent Sheila Jordan and OUSD interim state administrator Vincent Matthews will honor National Children's Book Week by reading to students at Manzanita Seed Elementary School this morning. 2409 E. 27th.

SATURDAY

All spuds, no duds! Take the kids to the Mr. Potato Head Beauty Contest where they can cook up a stylin' potato personality. Museum of Children's Art, 1 p.m.–4 p.m., $7, 528 Ninth St., (510) 465-8770.

Help keep youth out of jail! Harry Belafonte's National Gathering for Justice. All day, Nov. 17-18, free, Oakland Marriott, 1001 Broadway.

SUNDAY

Scouting for Food 20th anniversary. Over 40,000 Bay Area Boy Scouts will be in neighborhoods collecting food. Last year the scouts collected 168,275 pounds of food. Flyers will be distributed to residents on Saturday reminding them to leave bags of food on their front porches on Sunday. Earl J. Rivard

You can't keep the good ones down. Alameda native Earl J. Rivard was hit by a car when he was four months old and then, later in life, was hit two more times. The blind and partially-paralyzed Rivard doesn't let any of this get him down, releasing Troubadour Blue.
