Iron Chef Chen Kenichi says Mitama has “Fresh fish, the best sushi in the East Bay.” Definitely the kind of quote you want on the front of your menu, and the Iron Chef is not far off the mark. This charming Rockridge corner restaurant offers very friendly service and very fresh fish as well as a complete Japanese menu. The hardest part is deciding which way to go when faced with appetizers, sashimi, sushi, robata-grilled items, noodles and entrees of katsu, tempura and teriyaki. On our visit the chicken udon and special maki rolls like the Alcatraz (tempura shrimps, snow crab, tobiko [the tiny eggs are green here], scallions and salmon), negi hama (yellowtail, scallions and sesame seeds) and Rockridge (spicy scallops, asparagus with tobiko and sauce) were enough to inspire future returns. Lunch and dinner Tue.–Sun.
