One of the first San Francisco-to-Oakland transplants, Garibaldi’s offers creative upscale fare in a casually chic postindustrial space that is both family friendly and inviting for boisterous scene-makers at the cocktail-crazed bar. But the food (supplemented by a strong wine list) comes first, and executive chef Scott Sasaki and chef de cuisine Shane McAnelly bolster College Avenue’s “gourmet ghetto south” status with fresh and flavorful combinations of local seasonal ingredients (produce, chicken, beef, fish) and Mediterranean essentials spanning the Middle East to Spain (baba ghannouj, olives, gnocchi, jamón serrano). Lamb and the occasional paella are specialties, and the changing-theme, three-course prix fixe menu is a well-conceived temptation. Lunch Mon.–Fri., dinner nightly, brunch Sun.
