Essential Information

677 Rand Ave.
Oakland, CA

510-272-0535

It’s a hole-in-the-wall on a hard-to-find-parking side street around the corner from the Grand Lake Theater, with a slightly less inviting ambience than its Elmwood counterpart, but pilgrims in search of the archetypal falafel (whether in a pita sandwich or on one of several special combo plates) are richly rewarded here. The extensive kosher menu includes the East Bay’s best hummus, tasty schwarma (chicken, or lamb and turkey), wonderful soups (matzo ball and a daily vegetarian option), bright, flavorful salads, Moroccan couscous, Israeli sambusak (stuffed pastry), shishlik, schnitzel, mejadra (rice and lentils), Yemeni malawach (flatbread), rice pudding, Israeli coffee and more. The chile/garlic/parsley hot sauce is a brilliant bonus, and the mint lemonade a must. Serves lunch and dinner Sun.–Fri. (Also: 2965 College Ave., Berkeley, 510-665-1672.)
