More at the Marketplace

Michael Duca

Slowly but surely, the Alameda Marketplace (1650 Park St.) is rounding into its final form. The latest addition to the lineup is the Alameda Marketplace Kitchen, which is a full-service deli.
The open kitchen behind the counters lets you know that the food is fresh and prepared on-site. With the exception of the cold cuts recently added, everything is made from scratch.
The menu, unlike many delis, offers more than a passing bow to vegetarian customers. One of the two fresh-made soups each day is vegetarian. The hot dishes always include a rotisserie-roasted free-range chicken ($9.95 whole, with side dishes available). Hot sandwiches include roast beef and turkey roasted and carved on the premises; occasionally, prime ribs will be rotisserie-roasted as well. Daily specials include grilled seasonal
vegetables and side dishes such as pilaf or macaroni and cheese.
Owner Terry MacDevitt always provides hot specials, such as roasted pork loin with Bing cherry sauce, and seasonally fresh salads such as Caesar, avocado with mustard greens or roasted beets.
MacDevitt hopes to emulate the Pasta Shop on College Avenue in Berkeley by having pre-packed meal components ready for purchase by those who don’t feel like eating out, but just can’t face cooking dinner tonight.
Gourmet deli meats and cheeses can be sliced to order, and MacDevitt encourages people to contact the Marketplace Kitchen for their party needs, including Super Bowl parties. Cold trays, buffet dishes or entire prime ribs or turkeys can be ordered. The sandwiches use breads from the Feel Good Bakery, which is adjacent to the deli in the Marketplace building.
The Alameda Marketplace Kitchen is open seven days a week from 10 a.m.-8 p.m., and there is a parking lot adjacent to the Marketplace. Orders can be phoned in at 522-FOOD (522-3663), or you can fax your request to 522-TOGO (522-8646). Cash or personal checks are accepted but no credit cards.
